Electrocardiography (EKG) is procedure which records electrical impulses that precede the contractions of the heart. The procedure does not cause discomfort and the procedure only takes approximately 10 -15 minutes. EKG is used to diagnose heart conditions including cardiomyopathy, coronary heart disease, pericarditis, coronary thrombosis and arrhythmias.
The EKG report is a printed graph and show the physician if the chambers of the heart are contracting with a regular, normal rhythm. Irregularities in the printed graph could signal ventricular fibrillation, a complete heart blockage, inadequate blood or oxygen supply to the heart, hypertrophy or arterial fibrillation.
Any person who is suspected of having heart disease may have an EKG taken as a preliminary screening of suspected heart issues.
